Understand the initial risk
Single-source tooling, long replacement lead times, high minimum order quantities, regional concentration, quality issues or a supplier exit require different second-source strategies.

A second source does not automatically reduce risk. It must be technically equivalent, documented and qualified through the required approval process.

Define technical equivalence
Not every historical supplier specification is fully captured in the drawing. Material, surface finish, parting lines, post-processing, packaging and inspection methods must be aligned before sampling.

Qualify through a controlled sequence
The RFQ, tooling decision, first articles, internal testing and series approval create a traceable path. A second source is ready only after customer approval.
